A Traveller’s Guide: The Wayward World (Guest Post from DB Rook)
Hiya fiends! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? But, we’re back with a new Traveller’s Guide! This time, author DB Rook is taking the helm and introducing us to the Wayward World as part of the Escapist Book Co‘s tour for “Callus & Crow”.
About “Callus & Crow”
Can a path of blood lead to redemption?
Is redemption enough to amend a wayward world?
Morality and reality have shifted from their natural axis. Technology and ideology derive from the remnants of a world long dead and segregated by the monsters that now rule the seas.
Crow, a young ranch hand, is swept into an odyssey of redemption and revenge as he strives to hold back the ravages of fate and the urges born of a curse shared with his new mentor.
Callus, an exile struggling to find redemption whilst keeping his vampiric curse from tainting his new ward, pursues his prey across the sea.
The new world they discover reveals a tyrannical society fixated on their council’s ascension to godhood.
The Guide…
The World
Once, this planet may have been familiar, comfortable even. Yes, it was marred by continual conflict, the constant rise and fall of its inhabitants (and their technologies), and continuous global ignorance towards the dangers that threatened it, but you would have recognized it all the same.
Then came The Communion
An apocalyptic event that warped the very fabric of the world’s reality. A crescendo of technological arrogance that led to the Wayward World as we know it. Few things were marked safe from the devastation. Creatures warped, natural laws were stretched, cultures cross-pollinated and flung from one continent to the next. It would not be entirely inaccurate to describe the event as the violent shaking of a metaphysical, pre-Communion Snowglobe.
Post-Communion.
The seas are filled with gigantic, predatory creatures that make any crossing between land masses impossible. Pockets of humanity tentatively emerge from the devastation of The Communion and scrabble in the earth, desperate to find clues left by pre-Communion Landcestors. Relics and leavings are gathered and utilized, shaping the cultures and ideologies of the new civilisations. Many believe themselves alone, surrounded by the monsters of the sea, but there are few that would seek to cross into new worlds, harnessing the technologies and assets they have been blessed with. In awe of the historical blueprints of societies long dead, people emulate, advance and populate, believing in their own advancement above all things. A matter of survival and prosperity, never a thought for the morality or the cyclic events or the fall of pre-Communion civilization.
Reality has been torn, malformed, giving rise to phenomena not present in the old books and works of popular culture. Entities seek justice, to rectify and amend the world, to heave it back to its natural axis, to reinstate natural order and thwart the rise of the undeserved.
The Wayward world.
With great power comes effluence. The city of Cthonica, gifted with the bare bones of advanced technology and the drive to recruit the greedy, the ambitious and the ruthless. The Cthonic Council rise, stamping on those beneath them to advance their path to godhood. Through experimentation and exploration, the city rises towards the science-made smog in the sky, casting out its tendrils to gather more power and influence across the land.
It is this industrial revolution that gives birth to the first advancement of the age. Now that its people are under control, put to work to advance the great machines and towers of the founders, the Cthonic Council turns its gaze across the sea.
In a far-flung corner of the western world, a young man falls in with a cursed man, a man with a need for vengeance and redemption in equal measures. Their odyssey will take them across the sea and into a new world. Here they will learn new values and share afflictions while they scratch at the surface of their prophesied journey to amend the Wayward World.
