Book Review: “Within Trembling Caverns” by Georgina Jeffery

About the Book:

A dark fairy tale in a modern Polish setting. A grandmother cares for an ailing dragon… but her compassion puts her own grandchildren in the jaws of danger.

Set on the outskirts of modern Krakow, an elderly woman named Truda feels a sense of duty to look after a cave-bound dragon near her home. But when misfortune strikes and she can no longer feed the beast, her own family are at risk of becoming meals for her starving, scaly ward…

This is a standalone novelette of about 11,000 words, and is the second installment in the Dark Folklore series.

Review:

This is book 2 in Georgina Jefferey’s Dark Folklore series. The stories, however, do not seem to be connected, so you can enjoy them in any order. Where “Beyond the Thundering Waters” looked at huldras, this story focuses on dragons.

Just like in the previous story, the word count is small, but the story, characters and emotions are HUGE. When reading “Beyond the Thundering Waters” I felt like I was a little girl, but this time I felt like I’d become an old woman called Truda. I loved the way she dealt with her secrets and the places she was willing to go to in order to protect her family. This may be a short story, but it packs an almighty punch.

I loved that the main character was an older person. All too often, I feel like once women get to a certain age, they become invisible, but this story shows that couldn’t be further from the truth. Truda is a strong woman with tremendous courage, and even though she may not be as spry as she used to be, she still dives into some thrilling situations.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
